Spring 2

Our next unit this Spring term is called Animal Diaries and Recounts. This is a brand new genre of writing for the children so we will be finding out what a recount is, continuing our work on past tense and conjunctions and researching an animal of our choice. By the end of the unit we will be writing our own animal diary about the animal that we researched.

This is the book we will be using this unit:

Diary of a Wombat by Jackie French

Spring 1

Our next unit this Spring term is called "Monster Poems". In this unit we will be building on our learning of poetry from the autumn term. We will be reading and discussing a range of different monster themed poems, learning about statements, commands and questions and writing two monster poems of our own!

This is the poetry book we will be using this unit:

Also your year 2 teachers Miss Mulcahy and Ms Raynham have been very silly and lost a monster in school somewhere. Keep an eye out for Lucy, our beloved pet bird monster, who escaped last Monday morning. See the poster below for more information!

Our first unit this half term is Stories about Dragons. We had an exciting start to our unit with some dragon sightings (see below for some picture and video evidence!) and the children now can't wait to write their dragon stories. Throughout the unit we will be doing some descriptive writing using some expanded noun phrases and we will also continue our learning on conjunctions. The unit will culminate in everyone writing their own version of the Paper Bag Princess.

These are some of the stories we will be enjoying in this unit:

Can you spot a dragon in our pictures?

The dragon even laid an egg! Look at it hatching....

Autumn 2

Our last unit in Autumn 2 is Classic Poems by Edward Lear. In this unit we will learn the poem "The Owl and the Pussycat" as by the of the unit we will write our own version of this nonsense poem. We will also be doing some more learning about nouns and adjectives as well as finding out what a preposition is.

The Owl and the Pussycat

Our new unit for Autumn 2 is called Familiar Settings: Imaginary Creatures. In this unit we will be reading a variety of stories that involve imaginary creatures. We will be completing some grammar learning on expanded noun phrases and continuing our work on past tense. By the end of the unit the children will write a story based on the story "The Sand Horse". They will think of their own sand creature that comes to life and has an adventure.

These are the texts we will be reading throughout this unit:
