Our current unit of learning is Narratives of Liberation in which we read biographical accounts. We will be reading Henry's Freedom Box by Ellen Levine- a story about the escape of a young slave in America. We will be reading about Rosa Parks through several books. Who was Rosa Parks by Yona Zeldis McDonough and Rosa Parks from the Little People, Big Dreams series by Lisbeth Kaiser. At the end of the unit, we will be writing our own biographical account of the life of Rosa Parks.

We started this term by looking at modern versions of folk tales. We read stories about Selkies and mermaids and practised using our inference skills. We learnt how paragraphs are used to make writing clearer to read. We built on our knowledge of writing dialogue from the Autumn term. We wrote our own story.

Autumn term

We have learned about biographies. We read a biography of Leonardo da Vinci and other famous inventors before using what we had learned to write our own biography about Nick Park, creator of Wallace and Gromit.

Our next unit was Performance poetry. We learned poems by heart before performing them using different techniques. We were able to write and perform our own poems.

Our next unit was How to Train your Dragon by Cressida Cowell, a fantasy novel about a Viking boy who lives on an island and his adventures with his dragon. We  finished the unit by writing a story based on the characters and setting of the story.
