English Overview
Yellow= Autumn term Pink= Spring term Blue= Summer term
Summer 1
Our new unit for English this half term is information texts with a focus on dinosaurs. We will be researching dinosaurs with a grammar focus on nouns. adjectives and adverbs. We will also be reading and investigating a range of books to find out and answer questions about dinosaurs. We will end the unit by planning and writing our own dinosaur fact file on a dinosaur of our choice.
Spring 2
Our next unit this Spring term is called Animal Diaries and Recounts. This is a brand new genre of writing for the children so we will be finding out what a recount is, continuing our work on past tense and conjunctions and researching an animal of our choice. By the end of the unit we will be writing our own animal diary about the animal that we researched.
Spring 1
Our next unit this Spring term is called "Monster Poems". In this unit we will be building on our learning of poetry from the autumn term. We will be reading and discussing a range of different monster themed poems, learning about statements, commands and questions and writing two monster poems of our own! Check out our final pieces page at the end of term to see what we have produced.
Also your year 2 teachers Miss Mulcahy and Ms Morgan-Bates have been very silly and lost a monster in school somewhere. Keep an eye out for Lucy, our beloved pet bird monster, who escaped last Monday morning. See the poster below for more information!
Our first unit this half term is Stories about Dragons. We had an exciting start to our unit with some dragon sightings (see below for some picture and video evidence!) and the children now can't wait to write their dragon stories. Throughout the unit we will be doing some descriptive writing using some expanded noun phrases and we will also continue our learning on conjunctions. The unit will culminate in everyone writing their own version of the Paper Bag Princess.
Autumn Term One
This term we have explored different books to help us develop our imagination. The Bear and the Piano and Flat Rabbit have helped us to develop our skills of creative writing. We have been learning to use coordination and subordination to extend our sentences, and learn about past/present tense. The final week before half term, we will be putting all of our knowledge together to create out own stories ready to read to Fry!
Autumn Two
This term we have been drawing on classic picture books, sequencing plots, studying description and noun phrases, learning progressive forms of verbs and writing stories based on The Sand Horse. We have also looked at comprehension and SPAG units.
Instructions!
We have also explored following and writing our own instructions. We used commas for lists and investigated different sentence types. We created our own instructions to create an autumn leaf hedgehog!
