Diwali - The Festival of Light in RD

WB 06th November 2023

In RD this week, we have been busy making Diya Lamps to celebrate the festival of light (the biggest Hindu festival of the year). We are aiming to meet our reception early learning goal of 'To Know some similarities and differences between different religious and cultural communities in this country, drawing on their experiences and what has been read in class.' The children listened to a story and made the Diya lamps to take home to help them celebrate the festival of light. It is believed by Hindu's that the Diya Lamp helps to protect the family. We used our fine motor skills to mould the clay and decorate the lamp with tiny gems. Very tricky! But we did it! and we were amazing at it. We hope you like them.

In RS we have made self-portraits.  We used a mirror to look carefully at our features and talked about what we looked like.  We noticed that we are all different and we are all unique.  What do you think of our self- portraits?

Our self-portraits

Week beginning 6th November 2023

In RS we learnt about Remembrance Day.  We talked about why we call it Remembrance Day and why we use the symbol of the poppy.  This links to learning about different important events and special times and helping the children to develop their understanding of the world and to consider the feeling of others.  We made our own poppies as part of our learning. We shared the story "Where The Poppies Now Grow" by Hilary Robinson and Martin Impey.

We also celebrated Diwali in RS.  This is the biggest Hindu festival and is know as the "Festival of Light".  We made clay Diya's and learnt about the story of Rama and Sita as part of our learning and understanding of the world.

In RS we learnt about Chinese New Year and celebrated the Year of the Dragon.

We explored how to keep a healthy mind and how to develop good relationships in RS.

These are some of the ways we could stay positive and healthy.

We have been on a journey around the world and we have been reading the story "The Snail and the Whale" by Julia Donaldson.  We have made some under water pictures and learnt about some different places and animals around the world.

We explored the art work of Henri Rousseau.  We created some pictures in his style of art.
