SUMMER TERM

Stories from around the World

Our topic this term is "Stories from around the World".  We have already begun reading stories from Africa, and will be taking our journey to lots of other places!

We have an "International Supermarket" role play area in class.  If you have empty and clean containers reflecting different cultures could you please bring them into school.

Class Reminders

Our P.E. lessons are on FRIDAY afternoons. Please ensure that your child has a P.E. kit in school (shorts, t-shirt and plimsolls/trainers), and has your child's name on it.  Also, could all ear-rings be removed.

Show and Tell is on a Wednesdaywe are asking the children to bring in from home, something that they have MADE or DRAWN that they would like to share. They may also bring in photos to share if they have been somewhere or done something special, including "Wow" moments. Every week we will be visiting the Nature Garden and our library bus.

This term we are learning the story "The Three Little Pigs.

Here are some songs you can practise at home:

Phonics

In Reception we begin by practising our listening skills and developing our language for the first couple of weeks  We then move to learning "sounds" that letters make as well as beginning to learn the names of letters.  We follow the Read Write Inc scheme, and the children learn the sounds in this order:

Learning Set 1 Speed Sounds

These are the Set 1 Speed Sounds written with one letter:

m  a  s  d  t  i  n  p  g  o  c  k  u  b  f  e  l  h  r  j  v  y  w  z  x

These are the sounds written with two letters (your child will call these ‘special friends’):

sh  th  ch  qu  ng  nk  ck

Learning Set 2 Speed Sounds

ay ar  ee or igh air ow ir oo ou oo oy

Encourage children to blend sounds together when reading to form words and to segment words ("pull the sounds apart")  when writing.

Stories and reading at home

We encourage reading at home as much as possible.  We encourage reading for enjoyment as well as to support learning.  Children receive different coloured leaves for the amount of books they have read.

In school we read a variety of stories and non-fiction books to support the children's love of reading.  We also learn a different story each term, where the children learn actions and the vocabulary of the story.  We are currently learning "The 3 Little Pigs".

The children can practise this story at home and show you some of the actions they have learnt to support your child here:
