Welcome to Summer term

This term will be jam-packed full of learning and fun activities that we have planned.

Our topic for the first half term is 'On the farm' where the nursery children will explore everything that can be found on a farm. We will also be celebrating the coronation of King Charles III. The second half term will be focused on minibeasts and learning about the lifecycles of caterpillars and butterflies (amongst others!).

As usual, show and tell is on a Wednesday and children are invited to bring in an item from home that they can share with us - if you do have something topic related then this would be fantastic!!

Now that the weather should start to become sunnier and warmer, please could you ensure that children bring a water bottle to nursery every day and also, later in the term, a sunhat.

Many thanks!

Session time is 8.45 - 11.45am

Staying active

For our PE sessions we have been taking advantage of the glorious weather we have had. We have been practicing our gross motor skills and taking part in some sports day style races. We have had lots of fun concentrating in the egg and spoon race, jumping in the sack race and cheering on our friends in some running races!! We have also discussed why it is important for us to drink lots of water now it is getting warmer.

Minibeasts

For our minibeasts topic, we went on a hunt in the nature garden where the children searched for minibeasts. We found lots of different creatures - ants, bees, ladybirds, spiders and worms amongst others. In nursery we were lucky to have some caterpillars that we could watch as they grew. The children learned about their lifecycle and were very excited to discover the cocoons one morning when we came into school. Eventually we had three butterflies (named Flappy, Marshmallow and Gary) that hatched and we all took them to the school field to release them into the wild.

Building castles with 3D shapes

We have been planting seeds. The children all had the opportunity to investigate the seeds and are waiting to see what they will grow into... Here are some pictures of the planting process and what the plants looked like after two weeks.

We have been very busy this term learning some of our phonics sounds. Each week we learn a new sound and the we use blackboards to practice writing the letter. Here are some examples of the fantastic writing the children have done!!

Coronation celebration

To celebrate the coronation of King Charles and Queen Camilla the children in nursery were invited to dress in red, white and blue clothes. We made and decorated our own crowns and learned about what happens during a coronation. We played some traditional games such as hopscotch and skittles.

World book day 2023

We celebrated World book day in nursery with an Alice in Wonderland themed party. The children enjoyed dressing up as their favourite book characters and we held an 'unbirthday party' in place of our regular snack time. At the end of the session we even had time for a quick game of 'stick the smile on the Cheshire Cat'.

Volcano experiment

As part of our dinosaur topic we have been investigating volcanoes. This week we became scientists and did some experiments to make a 'volcano' explode. We looked at different ingredients and made predictions if we thought that the volcano would erupt. Here are some photographs of our budding scientists at work.

In maths we have been measuring dinosaurs with cubes. We have been learning how to compare sizes - tallest/smallest and longest/shortest. The children have also been practicing how to write numbers.

We have been reading lots of books in Nursery. The children are given access to a wide variety of books and this week we have been focusing our attention on non-fiction (information) books. From these books we have gained lots of new vocabulary and information on dinosaurs.

Reading dinosaur non-fiction books

For our topic we have been exploring dinosaurs and where they lived. We then used our knowledge to create our very own dinosaur habitat. The children visited the school's  nature garden where they collected items that we could use - sticks, stones and leaves. Once we had collected our items, we put together our habitat which also included a very slimy swamp! We have had lots of fun using our senses during this activity!!

Creating a dinosaur habitat

In nursery we enjoyed learning about Guy Fawkes night, we explored lots of sounds and colours that are created by fireworks. We watched videos and learned how to stay safe when watching fireworks. Here are some of the pictures that the children created, inspired by the fireworks that they had seen.

We love using musical instruments in nursery! We have learned the names of various instruments and have enjoyed experimenting with the sounds we can make with them all.

As part of our topic, we used mirrors to look at our facial features. The children (and teachers) then created our self portraits, these are displayed in our very own art gallery.

We have being learning  all about the different parts of our body, Miss Hickling drew a body shape and we helped to label it, we had lots of fun exploring and learning new vocabulary.
