Summer Term

In Year One we also use other reading materials to support us with our learning.

We love looking at our own class books we've made this year: we have our Fry book, an anthology of animal stories we wrote in English lessons, and our bear journals.

In science we are using books about seeds and growing plants.

In history we will use some books about toys throughout history.

Here are some of the books we are enjoying as a class:-

This beautiful non-fiction book about jungle animals has really inspired us to use descriptive words in our writing.

This fun story about a king learning to live a normal life (with the help of his cat) is reinforcing the money skills we're learning in Maths and Citizenship.

Prince Cinders

Prince Cinders leads a very hard life. Bullied by his three hairy brothers about his less-than-perfect looks, he spends all his time cleaning and tidying up after them. One Saturday night Prince Cinders' luck changes as a small, dirty fairy falls down the chimney and promises that his wishes shall come true. Not all the fairy's spells turn out as planned in this zany twist of a traditional story.

Cinderella

Cinderella wears rags, and lives as a servant under the watchful eyes of her cruel stepsisters. So, when the King invites everyone to a grand ball for the Prince to choose a wife, she must stay at home alone. If only Cinderella could go to the ball too, but she has nothing to wear. Just then, her Fairy Godmother appears and grants her wish … in a beautiful new gown and glass slippers, Cinderella can go to the ball! But she must be back by midnight. Will Cinderella dance with the handsome prince, and what will happen when the clock strikes twelve?

Superhero ABC

Silly and zany, and armed with the most unusual skills, the cast of superheroes that fill these pages will make learning ABCs an out-of-this-world experience.

Meet Bubble-Man, who blows big bubbles at bullies; Laughing Lass, who laughs loudly at lawbreakers; and many more hilarious and irresistible characters from renowned comic-book illustrator Bob McLeod.

Supertato

Meet Supertato! He's always there for you when the chips are down. He's the supermarket superhero with eyes everywhere - but now there's a pea on the loose. A very, very naughty pea. Has Supertato finally met his match?

Super Daisy

Planet Earth is in DANGER! It's on a fatal collision course with Planet Pea! If they crash then Planet Pea will explode into a gazillionpillionkillion peas, and that means only one thing . . . there'll be PEAS . . . WITH EVERYTHING!!!!
The fate of dinner-times world wide rests with Super Daisy.

Spring Term

Beginning History: The Great Fire Of London - Beginning History

We used this book in our history lessons to research and discover how the fire started, what devastation it caused and compare fire-fighting in 1666 to the present day.

When Louis gets eaten up by a Gulper, his big sister Sarah knows she has to act fast, and sets off in hot pursuit. But rescuing a boy from a Gulper's tummy isn't so simple - especially when other strange and scary creatures are looking for their dinner too. . .

5. There's a lion in my cornflakes

Have you ever collected coupons from a cereal box? Maybe you were saving them up for a book or a toy. Well, when Dan and his brother decide to collect 100 coupons so that they can have their very own lion, they assume the task will be easy enough. How wrong can you be?! A wildly wacky story where anything can happen.

4. Bringing the Rain to Kapiti Plain

In this lovely rhyming picture book, based upon the folk traditions of the Nandi people of Kenya, a herdsman named Ki-pat finds a way to end the drought, and bring some much-needed rain to Kapiti Plain.

3. Handa's Hen

In the sequel to the modern classic, Handa's Surprise, two girls count all of the exotic and exciting animals they discover as they search for their grandma's hen. Learn to count with Handa in the sequel to the bestselling Handa's Surprise. Every morning, Handa, a young girl from the Luo tribe of Kenya, feeds breakfast to Mondi, her grandma's black hen. This morning, however, Mondi is nowhere to be seen. So Handa and her friend Akeyo set off on a hunt, coming upon two fluttery butterflies, three stripy mice, four little lizards, five beautiful sunbirds, and many more intriguing creatures.

2. We're Going on a Lion Hunt

In David Axtell's beautifully illustrated rendition of a well-known children's poem, two sisters are out looking for a lion – a lion that lives on the African savanna. The girls go through swishy swashy long grass, a splishy splashy lake, and a Big Dark Cave. When they finally meet their lion, they have to run, run, run through it all again to get back home.

We really enjoyed this adapted version.

1. We're Going on a Bear Hunt

For a quarter of a century, readers have been swishy-swashying and splash-sploshing through the award-winning favourite picture book We're Going on a Bear Hunt by Michael Rosen, illustrated by Helen Oxenbury
