Year 6 Overview

Summer Term

Topic- Climate Change

In the Summer term, we are continuing our learning about climate change and looking at how we can implement changes within our environments (at home and at school) and what impact we can have on the world around us. In Year 6 we are beginning to look at how we can create new initiatives in class to help reduce, reuse and recycle!

 

Computing- Coding

In the Summer term, we are applying our knowledge of coding to apply to creating our own animated stories. We are able to apply what we have learnt in previous year groups to a unit all about coding.

 

Science- Classification

This term we will be looking at classification and learning all about Linnaeus’ theory and identifying a range of living things and organising them into groups. 

 

Indoor PE- Circuit Training and Leadership Skills

This Summer term, we will be learning about circuit training and how we can put our body to the test through different stations that all test our stamina and ability. We then move onto creating our own circuit training stations, applying our knowledge and skills. 

 

Outdoor PE- Rounders and Athletics

As well as circuit training, we are moving onto athletics and learning all the different strands of track and field. The children will be taking part each week in a different area of athletics, challenging themselves and applying a range of skills to each different area. 

 

Art-Plants and Flowers

In our next Art unit we will be learning how to use pencil, colour, Hapa Zome printing, sculpture and paper modelling to create  our own pieces based on a range of different plants and flowers. Throughout the unit, we will be exploring the work of India Flint, Alexander Calder, David Oliveira and Henri Rousseau.

 

DT- Global Food

In our next DT unit, we will be looking at food from all around the world and exploring how this cuisine is made, the flavours used and the cultural elements behind them. We will eventually cooking some of our own food from Germany and China. 

 

MFL- Sports

In French for the Summer term, we are moving onto to learning about sports; talking about what sports we like, giving opinions on sports and talking about sporting events. 

 

Music- Year 6 Production

Spring Term:

Topic- Climate Change  

This term for Topic we are learning all about climate change and broadening our understanding of how the world has changed or is changing due to climate change. Over the half term we will look at how countries and animals are affected and where our waste goes. We will then move onto looking at how we can change our everyday habits to support looking after our environment. 

 

 

Computing - Online Safety  

This half term, we are looking at online safety and the different strands that exist within this topic. We will look at secure websites, cyber-bullying and how to practice safe internet usage.  

 

Science - Light and Shadow.  

This term in Science, we are looking at light and shadows. We will be using our knowledge we already have from previous year groups to apply to new learning. Year 6 will be exploring different scientific investigations so keep a look out for our experiments!  

 

Indoor PE - Gymnastics 

This term in PE, we are moving onto Gymnastics, focusing on the topic of Rivers and Mountains. We will be using this as an inspiration to replicate rhythmic movements from a river or mountain. We will be moving our bodies in the form of rivers and mountains and creating new and unique shapes with different parts of our body. 

 

Outdoor PE- Netball

As part of our outdoor PE this term, we are focussing on netball; an invasion game using our skills and tactics that we have learnt in previous units. We will learn the rules of netball, different positions and how to outwit the opponent; all whilst improving our accuracy of passing and shooting. 

 

Art - The Seaside 

As part of our Art curriculum this term, our topic is the seaside where we will be looking at a range of artists such as Alfred Wallis  and focusing on  how the seaside is represented through art. We will begin this unit looking at drawing fish and shells, using pens to draw to add detail carefully.  

 

Citizenship- Keeping Safe  

In Citizenship, we are going to be learning all about how to keep ourselves safe as we grow older and what things we can do the keep safe when in the community. We will learn about basic first aid concepts and why it is important we know these basic needs as people in a wider community. 

 

MFL- Transport

As part of our French learning, we will be learning about different modes of transport and how people use these modes of transport to travel around. We will be applying our previous units knowledge to this unit and continue to broaden our oral and literacy skills in French.

 

Autumn Term:

 

Topic - In our topic learning this term, we are exploring the continent of South America. We are exploring the location, place knowledge and physical geography and finally we will look at the human geography where we focus on the Amazon Rainforest and find out about what life is like for the people, animals and plants that can be found in this wonderful Biom. We have been thoroughly enjoying learning more about this continent and building on prior knowledge from Year 5.

Science - This term in Science, we started to learn more about the circulatory system- something we have built on from Year 4. We started looking  at the heart, its function and the components of blood and we then moved onto finding out about our heart rate. We investigated this and how it changes when we exercise. In the second half of of the Autumn term we are exploring a new unit called Inheritance and Evolution where we will expand our knowledge and understanding on how humans have changed over time and what we inherit from our families. 

Art/DT- At the beginning of this term, we linked our Topic learning with our Art and learnt about South American artists. We discovered more about Freda Kahlo, Torres Garcia, Diego Riviera and Beatriz Milihaze; we took inspiration from these artists and created a range of different art medium such as collages, murals, self-portraits and much more! This half term, we will be diving into Design Technology where we will be analysing, designing, creating and evaluating marble runs - so look out for our finished products soon! 

Computing - So far this term, we have been expanding on our spreadsheet knowledge, specifically using Excel as the software. We learnt how to add, edit and calculate data whilst completing challenges building on this knowledge. We then used these skills to create our own spreadsheets and presented our data in a table. This term, we are building on our programming knowledge, using the software Kodu. We will learn how to program characters and create small games - we look forward to sharing this with you! 

PE - In PE this term so far, we built on our gymnastics knowledge and started to leap, roll and vault! We built on our resilience and confidence to put all of these skills into a sequenced routine. In outdoor PE, we focused on team games, working collaboratively and using our attacking and defending skills learnt in previous year groups. This term in indoor PE, we are focusing on dance, learning how to use our bodies and improvise with different movements, all through the theme of Electricity. In outdoor PE, we are moving to invasion games where we will apply our skills of teamwork, attacking and defending into a game situation. 

MFL- In French we are learning to discuss our likes and dislikes. We are building up to being able to have a conversation where we can talk about our favourite hobbies with one another. 

Citizenship- This term, we have been learning all about collaboration, the importance of working as a team and the many different roles we find within a community. We then moved onto understanding more about our own mental health and wellbeing and we learnt a range of strategies that we can use to support this. 

RE- In RE this term, we are learning about what other religions believe happens to a person when they pass away and we are comparing any similarities and differences. We are then using this knowledge to reflect on our own thoughts and beliefs.
