Curriculum Overview for Year 4

Our main topic this term is the environment and climate change. In science, we will be studying living things. Our art will be the theme of fruit and vegetables. We will be exploring how to create art using different media with the subject. In the second half term in DT, we will be creating recipes based on vegetables which grow at this time of year. Citizenship focuses on an Enterprise Project where we research and create photo frames which we sell to make a profit. Our RE topic is about the rules and guidance given by different religions. In music we will be learning songs from Carmen which we hope to perform at the end of term.  Indoor PE is circuit training where we will learn how to train our bodies. Dance in the second half term will be preparing and rehearsing for our Dance Festival at the end of term. Outdoor PE will be cricket in the first half term. We will be improving our athletics skills in the second half term. Computing is learning coding using Scratch in the first half term. In the second half term, we using and applying our skills to create cartoon characters. In French we learn to talk about food items and clothes.

We will be exploring how to create art based on human and animal bodies. In the second half term, we will be creating mechanisms. Citizenship focuses on safety and simple first aid. Our RE topic is about the journey of life and how this is celebrated by different faiths. Music is about composing based on Stand by Me. In the second half term we will be improvising to perform the song Stop! Gymnastics is based on Ancient Egypt. Dance in the second half term will be based on the topic of the Romans. Outdoor PE will be Invasion Games. We will be playing hockey. Computing is about staying safe online. In the second half term, we will be learning about animation.

Science

In Science this term we will be looking at the states of matter. We will be looking in detail at the states solid, liquid, gas and water vapour. We will also conduct experiments in our classroom and around the school. 

Geography

So far this term we have looked at our local area before locating cities around our country. From this we compared places in our country and compared them with places in European countries. We are really good at locating places on a map now. This term we will be looking at mountains around the world including Kilimanjaro and Everest. For our final piece of work we will present our research in a mountain fact file. 

Art

We will be researching various European Artists ranging from sculptors to clothes designers. We will use their work as examples to create our own art work to develop our skill and will know how to improve our own drawings.

Design and Technology

For DT this term we are looking in to the history of kites and evaluating how they are made. After looking at the different components of a kite we will design our own kites before attempting to use our designs in order to make our own. We will also test our kites- hopefully we will have a breezy day!

Religious Education

In RE we will be looking at the Bible and researching why it is so important to Christians.

Citizenship

We looked at relationships and what qualities we look for in a good friend.

Music

Lat term we learnt about the band Abba and learn to sing the song Mama Mia! This term in Music we will be starting a performance unit, we will then apply the skills we've learnt to our winter production rehearsals and performance.

French

Last term in French we learnt how to use French vocabulary in order to describe people including nationalities and physical features. This term we are moving on to learning about hobbies and activities and beginning to tell the time in French. 

PE

In our indoor PE lessons this term we are completing a dance unit, we have started by using the stimuli of water in order to create some lovely movement. To complete the unit we will create a dance piece about the water cycle and perform our dances to various songs linking to the theme of water. 

In outdoor PE we have been taking part in multi-skills games where we have improved our ball skills. This term we will continue to develop those skills in our invasion games unit. 

ICT

Last term we used the program microsoft word in order to create or own information poster about European countries. We were able to use layout, spell check and short cuts effectively.

This term we will be using coding, programming and algorithms to program a turtle.
