Our first unit of learning in the Summer term is stories set in the rainforest. We will be learning more about paragraphs. We will learn about different types of verbs and when to use them. We will be writing our own stories based in the rainforest.

Our current unit is narrative poems. We are reading many different story poems. We are working on performances of these. We will be writing our own narrative poem based on a funny event in our own lives.

We studied Narratives of Liberation in which we read biographical accounts. We read Henry's Freedom Box by Ellen Levine- a story about the escape of a young slave in America. We read about Rosa Parks through several books. Who was Rosa Parks by Yona Zeldis McDonough and Rosa Parks from the Little People, Big Dreams series by Lisbeth Kaiser. At the end of the unit, we wrote our own biographical account of the life of Rosa Parks.

We started this term by looking at modern versions of folk tales. We read stories about Selkies and mermaids and practised using our inference skills. We learnt how paragraphs are used to make writing clearer to read. We built on our knowledge of writing dialogue from the Autumn term. We wrote our own story.

Autumn term

We have learned about biographies. We read a biography of Leonardo da Vinci and other famous inventors before using what we had learned to write our own biography about Nick Park, creator of Wallace and Gromit.

Our next unit was Performance poetry. We learned poems by heart before performing them using different techniques. We were able to write and perform our own poems.

Our next unit was How to Train your Dragon by Cressida Cowell, a fantasy novel about a Viking boy who lives on an island and his adventures with his dragon. We  finished the unit by writing a story based on the characters and setting of the story.
