Summer Term

We will start the term by looking at the unit 'Shape'. The children will begin by understanding and using degrees, which will lead on to classifying and estimating angles, then using protractors to measure angles up to 180°. Following on from that the children with be drawing lines and angles accurately, calculating angles around a point and on a straight line and applying knowledge of angles in regular and irregular polygons  and finally looking at faces, edges and vertices of 3-D shapes.

Next in the Geometry unit, the children with further their understanding on position and direction. The children will read and plot co-ordinates and apply this to problem solving. Using these skills they will translate shapes with co-ordinates. Finally the children will investigate lines of symmetry and reflections in horizontal and vertical lines.

After that we will move on to decimals, where the children will use known facts to add and subtract decimals within and across 1 with the same and different number of decimal places. The children will develop efficient strategies for adding and subtracting decimals. Finally they will look at decimal sequences and multiply and divide decimals by 10, 100 and 1,000 and finally find missing values.

Then we will be studying negative numbers by: counting through zero in 1s, counting through zero in multiples, comparing and ordering negative numbers and calculating the difference.

Next, The children will converting units: kilograms and kilometers, millimetres and millilitres, converting units of length and metric and imperial units, converting units of time and calculating with timetables.

Finally the chidlren will be learning about Volume. They will be: learn about cubic centimetres, compare and estimate volume and estimate capacity.

Spring Term

We are currently learning about multiplication and division in year 5, this includes learning about multiplying four digit by one digit numbers, two digit by two digit numbers, three digit by two digit numbers and four digit and two digit numbers. We will then use these skills to help us solve problems with multiplication. After this we will be learning about short division, dividing a four digit by a one digit number, dividing with remainders, efficient division and we will finally solve problems with multiplication and division.

We will use our skills of division and multiplication that we learned in year 4 to help us with this unit.

Here are some examples of multiplying a four digit number by a one digit number and short division.

We previously earning about fractions in year 5, this included learning about equivalent fractions, converting mixed numbers and improper fractions, comparing and ordering fractions and finally adding and subtracting fractions and mixed numbers.

We used our times tables that we have learned previously to help us in this unit.

Here are some examples of how to find equivalent fractions and how to convert an improper fraction to a mixed number.
